THE ENORMOUS RADIO

“The Enormous Radio”, by John Cheever, reveals the desire of people’s interest in other people’s personal lives, mostly personal problems, and how can those personal information affect other people’s consideration of their own lives. Irene, main character of the story, becomes an addicted to the new enormous and ugly radio, which does not reflect her rigorous decoration style, only because of her desire to get information about other people’s lives. The author is mirroring today’s most common technological addiction; “facebook”. As well as today’s computer addicts, Irene prefers spend her all day listening the radio instead of socialize with her friends. Therefore, she starts to notice her own problems which she has been ignoring. In the end, instead of communicating with her husband about their problems, she ignores him and tries to find other people’s fights in the fixed version of radio.
That story makes me realize the essentiality of communication and unfortunately the fact that we all are losing our ability to overcome challenges by rejecting them. No matter how those profile pictures seem so perfect and ideal, in real life we cannot retouch our faces or ideas and the only way to resolve the problems is to confront with them.
